On Saturday, 25 September, AFRCC opened a mission in Northern Illinois after multiple reports of an active distress beacon.

At approximately 2300L, the IC, Major Andrew Welch alerted ILWG of the need for Aircrew and Ground / UDF personnel. Immediately an aircrew and UDF team responded from DuPage and Chicago Executive respectively.

Mission Pilot Maj. Eric Templeton and his crew acquired the signal shortly after departure, and tracked it to Campbell Airport (C81). The Group 22 UDF team, comprised of Palwaukee and Lake County Squadron members, arrived on-scene as the aircrew touched down. Mission Comms was handled by Maj. Jim Bartel, who kept the information flowing the entire evening.

Both aircrew and UDF members assisted in DF-ing the signal, which was found in a corporate-owned Piper Dakota. UDF team leader, Capt. Jim Griggs, then advised the IC that a non-distress signal was located. The signal was silenced, and all participants were given the order to RTB at approximately 0200L 26 Sept.
